While it’s sad that we won’t have Charlie Hunnam or Guillermo del Toro directly involved in the sequel to Pacific Rim, I’m getting pretty excited about seeing what Daredevil showrunner, Steven S. DeKnight can do for the film as well as how John Boyega does at taking down a couple of Kaiju.
Today, we’ve learned that the sequel is going to start filming this November, with principal photography taking place in both Australia and China. The latter is not a surprise at all, given the emphasis now placed on the Chinese film market. To that end, it was also just announced that Chinese actress, Jing Tian, would be joining the cast.
As far as Del Toro’s role in the film, he’s stated that he won’t be directing, but he’s still heavily involved in the production. He also said that, despite the lack of announcements, we will be seeing many of the original film’s cast in this new movie. Meanwhile, we’ll get to see how it all comes together when Pacific Rim 2 hits theaters on February 23, 2018.
