BBC Sets “Are You Being Served” Reboot

For most US kids in the 90’s, the most British thing we ever got to experience was whatever aired on PBS on Saturday nights. That meant that every week, you were guaranteed at least 30 minutes of the legendary comedy, Are You Being Served. If you’ve never heard of it, it’s a British sitcom about a group of motly band of employees working in a fancy department store. The new NBC show, Superstore, actually reminds me of a very Americanized homage to it.

The original series had 69 episodes and ran from 1972 to 1985. It’s being brought back as part of BBC’s “landmark comedy season” later this year.

According to the BBC, the new show will pick up where Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft’s much-loved comedy left off. It will bring an an all-star cast to fill the rolls of Mrs Slocombe, Captain Peacock, Miss Brahms, and Mr Humphries. Sadly, we won’t be seeing any original cast members likeMollie Sugden, John Inman, Nicholas Smith, or Wendy Richard as they have all passed away.

Are You Being Served is one of several reboots being planned for this year, the 60th anniversary the UK’s first sitcom. Some of other shows coming back include: including Keeping Up Appearances, Porridge, The Good Life and Up Pompeii!
