‘Coming To America’ 2 Lands New Director

30 years after Coming to America hit theaters in 1988, the sequel is now the closest it’s ever been to becoming a reality. The classic Eddie Murphy film that also starred talent including Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headly, and John Amos tells the story of an African Prince who comes to America in search of true love.

Deadline is reporting that the film just tapped a new director in Hustle and Flow helmer, Craig Brewer. This won’t be the first time that Brewer and Murphy have worked together, they just recently wrapped production on the upcoming Netflix biopic, “My Name Is Dolemite.”

There is currently no news on when the film is set to be released, or if any other original cast members would be returning for the sequel, but they hope to begin production sometime in 2019.

Here’s what Murphy had to say in a statement to Deadline:

“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward,” Murphy said in a statement. “We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”
