When Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20, 2019 they won’t just have a few angry fans to worry about. It looks like they’ll also have to tackle a herd of singing cats. Tom Hooper’s adaptation of the Broadway musical, Cats, has been slated for release on the same day and it’s bringing with it the star power of names like Taylor Swift, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson, and Ian McKellan.
Is this going to make a big difference for Star Wars’ box office in the long run? Probably not, but it is pretty smart counter-programming on the part of Universal who had previously slotted the adaptation of another musical, Wicked, in that spot.
