Disney Embraces Same Sex Romance on ‘Once Upon A Time’

Admittedly, I haven’t watched Disney’s Once Upon a Time on ABC for a couple years. Just before I gave up on it, they had begun to touch on the idea that women were allowed to like women in a story line where it was admitted by Mulan that she had unrequited feelings for Aurora.

Last night’s episode, “Ruby Slippers,” brought a new chance for love to the story between Meghan Ory’s Ruby (Little Red Riding Hood) and Teri Reeves’ Dororthy (you know… of Oz?). After Dorothy is put under a spell by the Wicked Witch, it’s only true love’s kiss that can save the day, and Ruby was more than happy to deliver it.

In regards to the way they decided to open the show up for LGBT relationships, this is what co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis said:
“True love’s kiss has been a staple of this show since the beginning. This past Sunday’s episode was just another example of how in a fairy tale, as in life, love is love. We wanted to tell it no differently than we would with Robin and Regina or Snow and Charming. We just wanted to tell a love story. For us, it’s a love story like any other and it’s something we’re excited about.”
