The first trailer just dropped for the Doogie Howser reboot, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., and we now have our first look at the Hawaii-set story about a young female doctor who’s talent parallels that of “that show from the 90s, Doogie Howser.” It’s actually a really interesting change to make from the original and protects against people arguing that this is just another gender-swapped reboot. By doing this, the viewer and the characters have the shared experience of Doogie Howser being a popular fictional show from the past. So, in the same way that we give co-workers nicknames, it makes total sense that her co-workers would refer to the new teenage doctor as “Doogie.”
In the new series, Peyton Elizabeth Lee plays 16-year-old doctor, Lahela Kamealoha. Playing her mother and boss at the hospital is Kathleen Rose Perkins while her father, a local man who is struggling with having a daughter more successful than he is, is played by Mulan and Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, Jason Scott Lee.
The 10-episode first season of Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. hits Disney+ on September 8th.
