The first trailer just dropped for the film adaptation of the best-selling novel, ‘Crazy Rich Asians.’ The film tells the story of an Asian American woman who goes with her boyfriend to visit his family in Singapore only to find out that he’s the bachelor son of the most wealthy family in the country. Starring as Rachel is Fresh Off The Boat’s Constance Wu with her boyfriend, Nick Young, being played by Henry Golding.
This movie is going to get a lot of attention because it has an all Asian cast and it goes against the Hollywood trope of desexualizing Asian men. We could dive into that, but that’s just the stuff that people like to talk about to show how woke they are. The important thing is that this looks like a really promising summer comedy and it’s great to see talented actors like Wu getting the big screen time they deserve.
Crazy Rich Asians hit theaters on August 17th and stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, and Awkwafina, with Ken Jeong Michelle Yeoh, Sonoya Mizuno, Chris Pang, Jimmy O. Yang, comedian Ronny Chieng, Remi Hii, and Nico Santos.
The story follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life.
It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Yeoh) taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things.
