It’s been a while since we’ve had a Roland Emmerich-style, over the top, star-studded action movie. Now it looks like we are about to get one, just in time for Veteran’s Day in November. In the new film, Midway, a cast that includes Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Etsushi Toyokawa, Tadanobu Asano, Luke Kleintank, Jun Kunimura, Darren Criss, Keean Johnson, Alexander Ludwig, with Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid and Woody Harrelson dramatically recreate how America responded to the attack at Pearl Harbor and stopped an even larger tragedy.
A battle of this size is right up Emmerich’s alley. Along with Independence Day, the director is also the force behind the 90’s Godzilla movie, The Day After Tomorrow, and Stargate. My only issue is that it looks like he hasn’t updated his special effects since Godzilla. A big part of this movie is going to be dogfighting airplanes, but the CGI planes look a little less real than what we got in the last Battlefront game. With films like Top Gun Maverick bragging about how much of their effects will be practical, I’d hate to see a potentially fun film get sidelined by crappy FX. However, there’s a chance that what we are seeing is just based on compression of the YouTube link, or it’s possible that these are not the finished effects. Let’s hope so because these are really bad.
Midway — In theaters November 8, 2019. Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Nick Jonas, Etsushi Toyokawa, Tadanobu Asano, Luke Kleintank, Jun Kunimura, Darren Criss, Keean Johnson, Alexander Ludwig, with Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid and Woody Harrelson.
MIDWAY centers on the Battle of Midway, a clash between the American fleet and the Imperial Japanese Navy which marked a pivotal turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII. The film, based on the real-life events of this heroic feat, tells the story of the leaders and soldiers who used their instincts, fortitude and bravery to overcome the odds.
