Everyone reading this has probably played tag with their friends, but there’s a very slim chance that any of you have kept that game going for thirty years. Apparently, one group of real friends actually did this and it’s the basis of a promising new buddy comedy called tag. The film focuses on the group and their wives as one of the taggers (Renner’s character) has decided that it’s time for him to retire, having not ever been tagged in the game.
On the surface, the movie sounds like it could be fun, even if it is going to inspire a bunch of bro squads to copy (or outdo) the game IRL. What really sells me on the premise of the film is the cast which features Jeremy Renner, Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis, Rashida Jones, Isla Fisher, Leslie Bibb, Hannibal Buress, and Jon Hamm.
For one month every year, five highly competitive friends hit the ground running in a no-holds-barred game of tag they’ve been playing since the first grade—risking their necks, their jobs, and their relationships to take each other down with the battle cry: “You’re It!”
This year, the game coincides with the wedding of their only undefeated player, which should finally make him an easy target. But he knows they’re coming…and he’s ready.
Based on a true story, the New Line Cinema comedy “Tag” shows how far some guys will go to be the last man standing.
