It was one of those things that sounded almost too good to be true. Todd McFarlane had cut a deal with Blumhouse to make a Spawn film to redeem the horrible one from the 90s. It would be a dark and gritty horror film with Jamie Foxx as Spawn/ Al Simmons and Jeremy Renner as Sam the detective. Now there’s word of delays due to creative differences and a quote from a new Todd McFarlane interview that makes me think the movie’s about to go up in smoke.
“The money’s sitting on the sidelines ready to go. I just need to get everyone that wants to put in money to shake their heads to the same script. As you can imagine, everyone has a slightly different version of it in their head. You just go and trying to appease a handful of people while not giving in to what it is that I’m trying to do myself. Because if I have to change it too much, I’ll just walk away from it all. “
That’s the talk from a guy who left Marvel to do his own thing when he Co-Founded Image Comics. It’s not the talk of a guy who wants to get his movie made. I’m all for Todd’s creative vision being the guiding force behind the film. And, we don’t know what the conflicting ideas are that are keeping everyone apart, but you have to wonder how much of the willingness to walk away is ego and how much is protectiveness for your creation. There’s a good chance it’s somewhere in the middle. Hopefully, they can find that middle ground and make the film happen.
