It’s hard to argue that How To Train Your Dragon is one of the best animated film series of all time. In fact, a lot of people would call the series perfect. More importantly, several studio executives call the franchise highly marketable… and when you’ve got a highly marketable animated franchise, there’s only one thing to do… that’s right… Live-Action Reboot.
THR is reporting that the adventures of Hiccup and Toothless are heading to the big screen as a live-action film in 2025. If there’s one reassuring aspect about the project it is that Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker behind the original animated trilogy, back as writer, director and producer of the new film.
With an ambitious premiere date of March 14, 2025 and not a single frame shot, Universal needs to get its butt moving. Casting is currently underway and announcements could be coming in the next few weeks.
One interesting thing to consider is that this film carries a lot more on it’s shoulders than just the future of the How To Train Your Dragon franchise or the upcoming planned Theme Park at Universal Studios Florida. If this live-action reboot is a success you can bet that other Dreamworks projects like Shrek and Kung-Fu Panda will also get the same treatment. Hell, if it makes enough money I wouldn’t be surprised if they dust off Prince of Egypt, The Croods, Boss Baby, or Spirit Stallion of The Cimmeron.
