Is ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Ripe For Revival?

Twin Peaks, Roseanne, Will & Grace, and X-Files are just some of the shows that have been brought back for a revival in the last couple of years. With many of the shows finding new success, a lot of people are starting to ask about America’s favorite demon-killing cheerleader. At a recent conference, Fox TV Group Chairman Gary Newman, took a few minutes to address the recent chatter about a possible return to Sunnydale:

“I think if you look in our library, ‘Buffy’ is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back. It’s something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with. When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it. And until Joss decides it’s time, it won’t happen. […] Most times when we brought things back, it started with the creator coming into us and saying I’ve got another story I want to tell. It seems to me that if there isn’t a real sense of nostalgia, a passionate fan base demonstrating they still want it then I don’t really buy bringing these shows back.”

One big challenge (or possible benefit) that Buffy has compared to the other revivals that we mentioned is that the show continued for several years in the comic books. There are several “seasons” of the show already written. If they did do a revival, the question would be, what happens to all of that content? Will it be retconned or included? The other question is whether the public will accept a return to a show that was considered to have such a strong feminist message after the recent accusations from his ex-wife about his treatment of women.
