Over the last 18 hours, a story has been spreading around the internet that Kenneth Branagh could be directing a live-action adaptation of Disney’s Gargoyles for the studio. While that seems a little ridiculous on the surface, it makes more sense than you’d think. First of all, we are talking about the man who directed the first Thor film for Marvel. When you add that to the amount of Shakespearean lore that is steeped into the Gargoyles series, it starts to feel almost plausible. Interestingly, this isn’t the first big name connected to a Gargoyles adaptation in the last year. It wasn’t too long ago that Jordan Peele was expressing some interest in making a film based on the show.
Unfortunately for fans of the show (Myself included), it turns out that this is just a rumor. Series creator, Greg Weisman took to social media earlier today to dispel the rumor as “Flat-out not true.”
There’s always the chance that Weisman could be lying to cover a bigger reveal at this week’s SDCC, or that he might just not know about it. After all, he has said repeatedly that Disney owns the series, not him.
One thing is for sure, the rumor has generated enough buzz that perhaps Disney will start giving an adaptation some serious consideration.
