Avatar was pretty much the highest grossing film of all time. There’s no way getting around it. People lost themselves so deeply in the world of Pandora that some of them were depressed after seeing the film. Hell, even Disney is building a whole amusement park for it at their Animal Kingdom resort in Orlando. For me, it was just Fern Gully 3D. Worse, I’m not a fan of the 3D genre, so there was really nothing there for me. In a new speech, director James Cameron just announced that he wants to change the way the world looks at 3D for future releases of the film. He wants to make it 3D without the glasses!
This is what he told reporters at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers’ Centennial Gala:
“I’m going to push. Not only for better tools, workflow, high dynamic range and high frame rates — the things we are working toward. I’m still very bullish on 3D, but we need brighter projection, and ultimately I think it can happen — with no glasses. We’ll get there.”
Personally, I wish he’d spend as much time on the story as he did on the effects. The Avatar sequels are set to come out, at some point. In the future. Maybe?
