James Cameron Gives Release Goal for Avatar 2

Now that Star Wars The Force Awakens is on the path to taking a solid swing at the record James Cameron planted on Avatar, it’s time for the blue people to pop up and remind us that they still exist and they’ve got a new movie on the way.

At the premier of the Avatar themed Cirque Du Soleil’s stage production of Pandora, Toruk: The First Flight, Cameron talked to reporters about what they might see in Avatar 2 and when they might actually see it.

“Christmas of ’17 is the target…At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story.”

He went on to say:

“We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It’s been about a two-year task. [We’ve finished] all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see. The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year.”

I’m not a huge fan of Avatar. All the special effects in the world can’t make that story worth watching. Still, I’ve got hopes that maybe this time he’ll focus as much on the writing as he does on the CGI.
