Jason Reitman Set To Direct ‘Ghostbusters 3’

News just broke through EW that the recent reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise is not going to be the end of the line. In fact, plans have been building behind the scenes to create a third movie based off of the original franchise for some time now. A little while ago, the announcement was made that not only is the film going to happen, but that Jason Reitman, the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman would be directing and co-writing the movie with Monster House scribe, Gil Kenan.

In the interview, Reitman confirmed that the new film would be a continuation of the original Ghostbusters films from the 80’s.

“This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

For his part, Ivan Reitman will still be on board to produce the film. Here’s what he had to say about working on the new film with his son:

“It will be a passing of the torch both inside and out,” says Ivan, adding that he’s touched his son wanted to join this part of the family business. “It was a decision he had to come to himself. He worked really hard to be independent and developed a wonderful career on his own. So I was quite surprised when he came to me with Gil and said, ‘I know I’ve been saying for 10 years I’m the last person who should make a Ghostbusters movie, but…I have this idea.’ Literally, I was crying by the end of it, it was so emotional and funny.”

There’s no word on who will be returning from the original franchise. We imagine that Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson aren’t going to pass on the chance to bring the franchise back, but it remains to be seen as to whether they can finally convince Bill Murray to come back or if Sigourney Weaver can make room in her schedule of four Avatar sequels that she’s currently filming.
