The third and final big announcement from Marvel today is the third film in the Thor movie franchise is now official, Thor: Ragnarok. What might be the best part of the announcement for fans is that along with Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, will also be returning to reprise his role as Loki. Marvel made sure to also mention that the film is the cornerstone to phase three of their cinematic universe.
If they are keeping to the comic story, Ragnarok is a cloned cyborg version of Thor. As this movie will take place directly after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, I would not be surprised if Ultron plays a role in his creation.
In the comics Ragnarok came to be after Thor went missing and was presumed dead. Tony Stark and Hank Pym teamed up to create the clone with a hair of Thor’s that Stark happened to have. We can guess that means that Thor will be thought dead by the rest of The Avengers by the end of the battle with Ultron. The clone was also used by Stark to fight on his side during the Marvel Civil War, so it would not be surprising to see him pop up in Captain America: Civil War.
Interestingly, Thor: Ragnarok is set to hit theaters on July 28, 2017, just a week after FOX is scheduled to release Fantastic Four 2. As we now know just how displeased Marvel is with FOX (going as far as cancelling the Fantastic Four comic book), this is one hell of a shot over the bow.
