The Matrix will always go down as one of the best science fiction films of all times, but the trilogy, sadly, did not end as strongly as it started. In recent years there was talk of rebooting the series, but now it sounds like a reboot is off the table and a full-blown sequel is where it’s at.
Variety is now reporting that a fourth installment of the film is indeed happening and both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity. At this point, however, it seems like only Lana Wachowski (formerly of the Wachowski Bros) is set to come back and work on the film. There’s no word on whether her sister Lilly will also be back.
The big question that fans of the franchise are asking at this point is, how do you make a new chapter of a franchise starring two characters who died at the end of the last film? I guess it wouldn’t be the first time that Neo died and came back, and if he is the Jesus of the Matrix, it makes sense that he’d also be able to bring back Trinity. Or, perhaps Trinity is an in-Matrix only construct that is just a skin being used to hide a resurgent Agent Smith. Don’t expect details any time soon as production isn’t set to begin until sometime early next year.
Here’s what Lana Wachowski had to say about returning to the franchise:
“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
