What the hell is a re-quel? It’s a new trend that film franchises have started doing when they realize they’ve diluted great movie properties with garbage sequels and reboots. Blomkamp had previously attempted to do this with the Aliens franchise, but his film was shelved in favor of the prequel films. Tim Miller and James Cameron are prepping a new Terminator film that pretends none of the movies after T2: Judgement Day were ever made. Now, Blomkamp will be directing a Robocop film based on a script that was meant to be the original sequel to first movie.
The first draft of the film was written by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, who also wrote the original film. Now it’s being punched up by Terminator reboot co-writer Justin Rhodes. At this point, we only have that and this tagline to go on:
Anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption.
It can’t be worse than the last Robocop film. Here’s hoping that Blomkamp can return it to its former glory.
