If the theme song for the Lego Movie was ‘Everything is Awesome’, the theme song for the Playmobil movie would be called ‘Everything is OK.’ That’s the problem the Playmobil movie is going to have. The toy line has always been looked on as a slightly lesser version of Legos and the movie can’t help but be placed into the same comparison game. As it is, I’ve accidentally typed LEGO three times while writing this post where I should have written Playmobil.
The movie has a strong voice cast going for it in Daniel Radcliffe, Jim Gaffigan Anya Taylor-Joy, Meagan Trainor, and Keenan Thompson, but the film isn’t grabbing me. With that said, I’m not really the target market, so that’s probably OK. The good news is that, unlike the LEGO Movie, none of the characters here are licensed from anywhere else. That means STX and Playmobil will get to keep all the money.
In PLAYMOBIL’s® animated action adventure, a top secret organization has caused citizens from different lands to vanish from thin air. The dashing and charismatic secret agent Rex Dasher (Daniel Radcliffe) must partner with smooth-talking food truck driver Del (Jim Gaffigan) and Marla (Anya Taylor-Joy) a smart, savvy civilian with her own secret agenda, to rescue them. Against unthinkable odds, the trio go on a fantastic journey across stunning new worlds as they gather clues for their rescue mission.
