Pixar Gets In Your Face With 3D

Great movie experience or Just another studio money grab? You decide.

Word is that Pixar is going to star re-releasing their greatest hits in everyone’s’ favorite new/ old format… 3D. I love me some Pixar, but i haven’t been impressed by a 3D film since The creature from the Black lagoon. For me at least, I’ve yet to be shown that a film can be made better by forcing action at the audience at a lower quality visual than they would get when they are watching it in 2D. I am pretty sure that everyone who saw Toy story 3 would never miss it in 3D if they were only given the standard format. Audiences have been able to lose themselves in good storytelling since the dawn of creation, no matter how gimmicky the visual.

OK, time to get off the soapbox… Here’s what Pixar has to say about it:

Ratatouille is one that we’re exploring doing [3D conversion on] and Brad Bird is very open to some changes, you know, some very subtle changes but slight reframings. If a character’s reaching forward and a pinky goes off screen, we’ll adjust the camera and the character a little bit to have the hand on. So that said, if the director’s open to minor modifications on a library title then that’s wonderful and we’re really excited about doing that.
