One of the early treats at Comic Con last night was a fan screening of the Judge Dredd reboot that is set for a a September release and Stars Karl Urban as Judge Dredd.
Deadline Hollywood’s take on the film was that fans of the comic will be thrilled with the film. It keeps the vibe of the original comics and maintains the gritty, violent feel that was lost when Stallone was in the role. On the downside, they think that the general movie goer won’t get the over the top style that was originally written in comics to as a social parody on American action films.
They also noted that this film shares a lot of similarities with The Raid and that could be a problem for people who are looking for something different.
Meanwhile, the guys at Comingsoon had a really positive view of the film, starting with the casting of Karl Urban, who they say is perfect for the role. They also noted how visually stunning and terrifically gory the film was.
More from their review:
I just want to let fans of the character know that it’s pretty clear to me that both screenwriter Alex Garland and director Peter Travis really understood the comics and they really impressed us with his interpretation of Judge Dredd from creating the stark, futuristic environment of Mega City One (in South Africa, of all places) to Dredd’s dialogue and demeanor and even Dredd’s multi-functional voice-controlled weapon.
Official Synopsis:
DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip
