We learned a few things about the upcoming Pacific Rim Sequel before Comic Con. We know that Steven S. DeKnight (the showrunner for the first season of Daredevil) would be directing the film instead of Benicio Del Toro and that Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) would be writing the script. From a casting angle, we had heard that John Boyega would be taking the lead role in the film, playing the son of the character played by Idris Elba in the first film. What we hadn’t heard until an interview at the con, was any news about any of the original cast members.
While we still don’t know about Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman or Burn Gorman, we have our answer about Charlie Hunnam, and it appears that he will not be returning do to schedule conflicts. It turns out that an early draft did feature his character heavily, but he just couldn’t make it work with his other filming commitments. I’m glad to hear that the Sons of Anarchy alum is doing well in his career, but I’m sad that he won’t be back for another ride in his Jeager.
