Two decades after the first Spawn film bombed on pretty much ever level imaginable, Todd McFarlane is getting a second chance to bring his signature character to life on the big screen. McFarlane took to Facebook to make the announcement today that he’s written the script and Blumhouse Productions is behind him all the way to produce the project. That’s actually really good news for Spawn fans because the last two horror films put out by Blumhouse were ‘Split’ and ‘Get Out’.
While the first attempt to bring Spawn to movie theaters ended up as an overblown blockbuster wannabe, Todd says that this time will be different:
I think it’s a quick shoot. It’s not going to be a giant budget with a lot of special effects, it’s going to be more of a horror movie and a thriller movie, not a superhero one.
There’s no word on what to expect from the storyline, but I’m really hoping they use the Ice Cream Man story from the early issues of Spawn. We already know it translates well to film as it was great when they adapted it for the Spawn animated series.
