The other day it was announced that Taika Waititi would be jumping on to direct Thor 4 due to delays on his live-action Akira film. With the recentness of that announcement and rumors that Thor would be appearing in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3, no one was expecting that we’d be getting an announcement about Thor 4 today, but here it is, and it’s called ‘Thor: Love and Thunder.’
No one was really surprised to hear that both Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson would be back for the new film, but everyone was surprised to hear that Natalie Portman would be returning to the franchise to not only play Jane Foster but to take on the mantle of Thor herself!
From what Waititi said in the panel, it sounds like we are looking at a film that could take inspiration from the comic book, The Mighty Thor, in which Jane Foster becomes Thor, but at a great cost to herself. In that story, Jane is undergoing cancer treatments when she takes on the mantle of Thor. The only problem is, each time she transforms, it purges all the chemo from her body, making it that much harder for her human body to fight off the cancer that is killing her.
Thor: Love and Thunder is slated to hit theaters on November 5, 2021.
