Variety reports that acclaimed writer-director Gary Ross has been brought on board to rewrite Spider-Man 4.
This will reunites Ross with series lead Tobey Maguire, who he directed previously in ‘Pleasantville’ and ‘Seabiscuit.’ Ross has been hired to overhaul the current script, which has been worked on by Jamie Vanderbilt and David Lindsay-Abaire.
While I wouldn’t say this is damage control by Sony, the hiring of Ross all points to a positive direction for the franchise seeking a fourth installment which, let’s not kid anyone, has lost more than few steps and is teetering near the campy nature of ‘Batman & Robin.’
Ross’ experience with Maguire can only add to the quality and as fans, we can only hope that things go accordingly. We’ll have more as Spider-Man 4 develops.
