Sylvester Stallone’s Cliffhanger wasn’t a great movie when it came out in 1993, but it was a lot of fun. It had action, mountain climbing and a cast that included Stallone, John Lithgow, Michael Rooker. Let’s not forget that it was directed by one of the biggest action directors of his day, Renny Harlin. Now, it has been decided from the studio on high that it is time for a reboot. Not just any reboot either, a gender-swapped reboot. the new film continues the trend of gender-swapped reboots and remakes that includes 2016’s Ghostbusters, Ocean’s Eight, and this year’s remake of Big, Little. The interesting thing here is that none of these films have been all that profitable for the studio.
The new version of the film is set to be directed by Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night), based on a script by Sascha Penn (Creed II). the movie will feature a female-led cast and may also include a cameo from Jason Mamoa. There’s no word on whether this will be a complete remake, or if it will follow the trend of semi-reboots by making the lead female Stallone’s daughter or something like that.
