‘Star Wars: Han Solo’ Directors Quit Over Creative Differences

When the Star Wars Han Solo film was announced, one of the biggest things Disney hung its hat on was the fact that they had pulled in Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to helm the film. As of a couple of hours ago, it looks like that is no longer the case. This leaves the production in a major lurch as it has been shooting since late February.

So, why did it happen? To borrow from another Disney film, it’s a tale as old as time – Creative Differences. In a statement about the break, Lord and Miller said:

“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew.”

For their part Lucasfilm head, Kathleen Kennedy released her own statement:
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,”

It will be interesting to see what impact this will have on the film’s final product and what exactly the creative differences were. Personally, this has always been the Star Wars film I didn’t want to see. The Han Solo story feels complete. Front loading an origin tale at this point Feels force. For my money, I’d have rather seen them focus the film around Donald Glover, giving us the rise and fall of Lando, or… you know… how about that Ewan McGregor Obi Wan Movie that everyone is begging for???

The Star Wars Han Solo film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, as well as Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson. Disney/ Lucasfilm will be announcing a new director to handle the final weeks of shooting and any reshoots in the next couple of days.
