The way Sony is announcing new Spider-Man universe projects and appearances by known characters in other upcoming films, is starting to remind me of game show contestant in one of those money booths. You know the ones where you get in and have 60 seconds to grab all the cash you can before the wind and the time runs out? Maybe they are just worried that when they lose the name affiliation with the MCU after Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, that their new sparkly carriage will turn back into an Avi Arad shaped pumpkin.
So what are we talking about here? Well, in addition to the upcoming Venom film starring Tom Hardy, and the Black Cat and Silver Sable project in development, Sony is now allegedly working on creating additional spider-villain films around Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio. In theory, this would give Sony the chance to pull an MCU style slow build up to an eventual Spider-Man vs The Sinister Six movie.
To add to the fun, we’ve got Amy Pascals comments form earlier in the week about hopefully getting Tom Holland into Venom for a small appearance, and new news today that Carnage will somehow feature into the venom film as well (we’re guessing as an after-credits scene).
These are a lot of plans to build on a franchise that hasn’t really re-launched yet, especially when half of its respectability is tied to the MCU agreement that ends After Homecoming 2. What makes things even more scary for fans is that Avi Arad, the man behind many a bad Marvel film (Including the last round of Spidey films and X-Men Origins: Wolverine), will producing them without the hand of Kevin Feige to steady him or smack him in the back of the head as needed.
