to call Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi would be an understatement. For some fans, the film successfully subverted expectations and provided a fresh take on an aging franchise. For others, the film disrespected the characters around which the franchise was built and wrote the saga into a corner with plot-holes and an unsatisfying story.
Regardless of what anyone thinks though, the box office is king and The Last Jedi made a ton of money. That means Johnson is definitely moving forward with his new Star Wars trilogy. However, we now know that he won’t be touching the classic characters of the franchise for his new story. Here’s what he said in a recent interview on the topic:
“We’re doing something that steps beyond the legacy characters. What does that look like? To me, the blue sky element of it is what was most striking about it. I know the way that I’m coming at it and what’s fun about it for everyone in George Lucas’ films is figuring out, ‘what’s the next step?’ It really makes you think and figure out what the essence of Star Wars is for me and what that will look like moving forward.”
