The Phantom Apprentice was one of the best episodes of the entire Star Wars: The Clone Wars series, and it set the stage for a tragic ending to the loved series. Among the things that made the episode so great was the lightsaber duel between Ahsoka Tano and Darth Maul. What many fans don’t know is that this wasn’t typical animation for the show. This was the first time in the history of the series that they employed motion capture for a fight scene, and who better to capture the movements of Darth Maul than Ray Park, the actor who portrayed the character in both The Phantom Menace and Solo: A Star Wars Story. In the soundstage, Park faced off against Lauren Mary Kim, a talented stuntwoman and actress who has appeared in Battle Angel: Alita, Netflix’s Daredevil, Punisher, and Iron Fist series, JJ Abrams’ Star Trek, The Orville and the upcoming Avatar 2 film from James Cameron.

Dave Filoni, executive producer and supervising director of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, along with cast and crew, discuss the making of Maul and Ahsoka Tano’s climactic battle on Mandalore.
