Fans were disappointed at yesterday’s news of a new delay in the release of the Marvel ‘New Mutants’ film, but at least FOX is still planning to release something about new mutants this year. To be honest, I was surprised to find that this wasn’t just another adaptation of some YA novel series. It seems like it fits the mold perfectly. It borrows from everything from Childhood’s End and Divergent to Hunger Games and The X-Men in its plot points and imagery. It tells the story of a group of teens that have developed powers in a world where most other children have died off. Now, fearing their powers, the adults want them all locked up, but it’s up to them to change the world. Well, at least it’s not trying to play too hard off the current Geopolitical situation in the US… On the upside, it’s got Mandy Moore in it. She’s always been pretty cool.
When teens mysteriously develop powerful new abilities, they are declared a threat by the government and detained. Sixteen-year-old Ruby, one of the most powerful young people anyone has encountered, escapes her camp and joins a group of runaway teens seeking safe haven. Soon this newfound family realizes that, in a world in which the adults in power have betrayed them, running is not enough and they must wage a resistance, using their collective power to take back control of their future.
