Anything I say here has to be base in the admission that I’ve not read the Archie comics since I was around 10 years old, and I haven’t seen the animated show in just about as long. Given my base of knowledge, I can’t say I would recognize the CW’s Riverdale as Archie related unless I was specifically told.
The new series stars K.J. Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, and Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, in a teen drama/ murder mystery that claims to have a real “Twin Peaks” kind of vibe.
To me, this just smacks of an attempt to squeeze money out of the name value of a classic property. I know, there are alternate Archie storylines now that have vampires, and stuff like that, but Archie always seemed to have a certain brightness to it. When I see this trailer, I just see Gossip Girl.
The new series is set for a two-episode premiere, June 4 on Disney+.
