Earlier today, EW announced that, between Disney Publishing, Del Rey, Marvel, and other publishing houses, 20 stories are set to be released in what is being called “Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The goal of the new books and comics is to fill in the gap between Return of The Jedi and The Force Awakens.
Here’s a quote from Disney Publishing’s Andrew Sugarman on it:
“The partnership with the story group and the editorial team always had to be true to the sanctity of the film while making sure that we find these moments to introduce hints, clues, and puzzle pieces. Without revealing what those pieces are, it will just allow readers to speculate about the new film: What could a location mean, or what could a character mean?”
“The Force Awakens is an extraordinarily, heavily guarded storyline. To track it, a lot of top-secret meetings were happening up in San Francisco as we worked through this program.”
“It’s a way to introduce the heroes and villains of that original trilogy to a new audience that might not be as familiar as the audience that went and saw the films when they first came out,”
So far, here’s what we know will be included in the “Journey”:
– A book from Del Rey called “Aftermath” (see below for the synopsis)
– A Marvel Comics series that is told from C-3P0’s perspective.
– A Children’s book from Studio Fun International titled: Star Wars: Ships of the Galaxy
– A Young Adult Novel, “Moving Target”, about Princess Leia, by Cecil Castellucci
– A Young Adult Novel, “The Weapon of a Jedi”, about Luke Skywalker, by Jason Fry
– A Young Adult Novel, “Smuggler’s Run”, about Han Solo, by Greg Rucka.
Additionally, EW revealed that they were also planning a series of books based on Episodes IV, V, and VI. from the perspective of secondary characters within the universe. Personally, I’d love to see the personal memoirs of Admiral Ackbar.
