Paypal, Tesla, and SpaceX creator, Elon Musk has now taken on the task of lobbyist, as he’s begun trying to convince the UN to ban killer robots. More specifically, Musk, along with 115 other experts are asking that the use of artificial intelligence be banned from use in weaponry.
The appeal was sent in the form of a letter to the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, and reads:
”Once developed, they will permit armed conflict to be fought at a scale greater than ever, and at timescales faster than humans can comprehend. These can be weapons of terror, weapons that despots and terrorists use against innocent populations, and weapons hacked to behave in undesirable ways…
We do not have long to act. Once this Pandora’s box is opened, it will be hard to close.”
The UN group in charge of autonomous weaponry was supposed to meet about it today, but it’s now been delayed until November (they were probably all watching the eclipse).
