Oculus Rift Creator Makes VR Headset That Kills You In Real Life When You Lose The Game

It’s a common trope in scifi. Players get sucked into a video game and they have to survive in the game or they will die in real life. Well, now one of the people who created the Oculus Rift has taken it upon themselves to create a new VR headset that makes this scenario a reality.

VICE is reporting that Palmer Lucky, the man considered to be the father of modern VR created the new headset to commemorate the anime, Sword Art Online with some of the two billion dollars he got from selling Oculus to Facebook in 2014.

The vr headset looks like a typical rig with one small exception. It has three explosive charges on it that sit over the screen. They are aimed at your forebrain and are set to detonate if you die in-game. Lucky took to his blog to explain why he created the deadly new device.

“The idea of tying your real life to your virtual avatar has always fascinated me—you instantly raise the stakes to the maximum level and force people to fundamentally rethink how they interact with the virtual world and the players inside it. Pumped up graphics might make a game look more real, but only the threat of serious consequences can make a game feel real to you and every other person in the game.”

Thankfully, there are no plans to make the helmet available to consumers. As of now, Luckey considers it to be a piece of art.
