Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Rear Window’ is a classic and a true cinematic masterpiece. If You haven’t seen it, then you’ve probably seen at least one of your favorite shows do a parody of it. In the film, a man with a broken leg takes to his window for entertainment while healing. Through his binoculars, he sees all the action in every apartment in his courtyard. The story takes a turn when he is convinced that he’s just seen one of his neighbors commit murder.
Now, editor, Jeff Desom has taken all of the footage of the courtyard from the movie and recompiled it into a single, panoramic, time-lapse scene. It is pretty amazing.
Here is what the film’s creator, Jeff Desom, has to say about how he was able to put this together.
I dissected all of Hitchcock’s Rear Window and stiched it back together in After Effects. I stabilized all the shots with camera movement in them. Since everything was filmed from pretty much the same angle I was able to match them into a single panoramic view of the entire backyard without any greater distortions. The order of events stays true to the movie’s plot.
