Iranian Soccer Game Gets Rid of Live Grenade Thrown On Field, Almost Loses Hand

It all went down in the middle of the AFC Championship game between soccer teams from Iran and Saudi Arabia in Dubai. In American sports, we’ve been known to throw everything from garbage to live squid on to the playing field or rink… in the middle east they skip the cephalopods and go straight to small explosives. Someone tossed a small grenade onto the field. One of the players must of thought it was a toy, because he picked it up and tossed it off the field. Good thing he tossed it when he did… another second and he’d be very lucky that he was playing a sport where the use of hands was not allowed.

The soccer balls were not the biggest balls on the court that day.

Official Video Description:
Wednesday night’s AFC Champions League clash between Iranian side Sepahan and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli produced no goals, but there was certainly some explosive action at the Foolad Shahr Stadium.

The quarterfinal first leg was temporarily interrupted when the referee ran to one of the sidelines to inspect debris thrown on the field by fans.
Sepahan midfielder Adel Kolahkaj picked up a small, black object and tossed it away from the pitch. Turns out that object was some kind of mini grenade or firecracker, which exploded upon landing, causing the referee and his assistant to run for their lives. No one was hurt in the incident, and the game was cancelled initially but players came back on field after security inspection was made. The police officials are still investigating this matter.
