If you wear contacts, you know how uncomfortable it can be when you lose one in your eye or when you just forget to take out a pair of disposable lenses. Apparently, one absent-minded woman didn’t realize that she had forgotten to take out her lenses… 27 times!
Honestly, I hope that this story is a hoax, because I can’t imagine a world in which this wouldn’t have driven someone to the emergency room long before this woman allegedly went to the doctor. That said, this is from the British Journal of Medicine, so you’d have to hope that it was a vetted story.
According to the journal, the person in question was a 67-year-old woman whom had gone in for a routine cataracts surgery. However, once the procedure began, the doctors found a “blue mass” of 17 contacts, all stuck together, and removed it from her eye. Then, as the doctors continued, they found another mass of an additional ten lenses, also stuck together.
“It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together. We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there.”
As to why the patient hadn’t sought treatment for the discomfort, she had just figured the pain was part of getting old. However, when she returned two weeks later, she told the doctor that her eyes were feeling much more comfortable… Ya think???
