George Takei Not Thrilled With STAR TREK BEYOND’s Sulu Being Gay

Yesterday, we reported that John Cho announced in a press interview that his iteration of Sulu in the new Star Trek movies, was in fact gay. He went on to describe a scene in the upcoming movie that features him and his partner, along with their daughter. In the interview he went on to explain that the change to the character was done partially because Simon Pegg and Justin Lin wanted the crew to better reflect the modern world, and partially in tribute to George Takei, who is gay and a staunch supporter of gay rights (along with one of the internet’s most beloved social media kings).

At the time of our report yesterday, there had been no word from Takei on the news. Now he has responded, and while his words are wise, they are not quite what we expected to hear. Check out what he told The Hollywood Reporter when they asked him about the character change.

“I’m delighted that there’s a gay character. Unfortunately, it’s a twisting of Gene’s creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it’s really unfortunate.”

Oh My.
