There’s a song that’s been making huge waves in the States from Korea. The artist’s name is Psy and he’s the guy behind the crazy viral song “Oppa Gangnam Style”. I have no idea what the hell the song’s about. The only words I can understand are :
“HEEEEEEEYYY!!!!”
“SEXY LAAAADDDYYYY!!”
“Korean”
“You know what I’m say”
“Style”
Lucky for my, Clyde is Korean and translated the song for me. He also made this song my ringtone because he says the girl described in the song is MEEEEEE!!!! Super <3. In case you haven't seen the 5th most viral video of all time:
It. Is. Absolutely. Fucking. HILARIOUS!!!! My girlfriend, Mochi, and I have no shame. We’re going to go the clubs and do this dance. I also want that fox ear shirt that guy was wearing in the elevator when he was working it out with all the hip thrusting.
Here’s the translation (thanks, Kpop Lyrics ):
Oppa is Gangnam style
Gangnam style
A girl who is warm and humanle during the day
A classy girl who know how to enjoy the freedom of a cup of coffee
A girl whose heart gets hotter when night comes
A girl with that kind of twist
I’m a guy
A guy who is as warm as you during the day
A guy who one-shots his coffee before it even cools down
A guy whose heart bursts when night comes
That kind of guy
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the end
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh
A girl who looks quiet but plays hard when she plays
A girl who puts her hair down when the right time comes
A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all
A sensable girl like that
I’m a guy
A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays
A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes
A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles
That kind of guy
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the end
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh
On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
I’m a man who knows a thing or two
On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
I’m a man who knows a thing or two
You know what I’m saying
Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh
Apparently Gangnam is a place in Korea where they have their own sense of style and swag and this Psy guy composed a love letter to all the sexy ladies of Gangnam because they’re his flavor of female. Nice.
Parodies and spoofs of this video and song have exploded all over the net. There are only 3 that I like and I’m going to share them with you.
1. Open Condom Star
Omg….this guy is hilarious. He also has a great voice. “Could I borrow? (no!)” I love that he dressed up in a tux and is dancing along.
But the real star is how he hears the Korean being translated into English gibberish. God, I can’t stop laughing. What is so amazing and beautiful to me is that a Korean song can find such a huge following in people who can’t even speak the language (myself included) but they try so hard to understand. Music is awesome in the way it can bring different cultures together.
2. K-Town Style
The guy rapping is a friend of mine. He’s a comedian and the founder of Kollaboration. His name is Paul “PK” Kim and is hilarious.
The reason I think this is so funny isn’t because he’s my friend. It’s because the original song is talking about the women of Gangnam. Paul takes it to the States and talks about very specific kind of girl known as the K-Town girls in Los Angeles.
3. Umma Style
“Umma” means “mother” in Korean. This video is, hands down, my favorite one. She is 61 years old and is ROCKING IT. I want to be her when I have kids old enough to teach me some dance moves, man. I’ll let them turn it into a video so that they can be popular…and then I’m going to embarrass them by doing the moves they taught me in front of their friends when I pick them up from school.
Respect.
