It’s been 23 years since Chicken Run hit theaters and became an instant cult classic for animation fans. The stop-motion film from Aardman Animation (Wallace and Gromit) brought in just under a quarter billion dollars at the global box office on a 45 million dollar budget. It’s honestly a surprise that it took them nearly two and a half decades to make the sequel.
Well, the chickens are back, with slightly different voices. Mel Gibson’s Rocky will now be played by Zachary Levy and Julia Sawalha’s Ginger will now be played by Thandie Newton. In the original film, Ginger and her flock were making a break for it in hopes of finding freedom on the other side of the fence. This time around, to save all chicken-kind, they must break in to the factory to stop their nemesis.
If it’s half as fun as the original, it will still be a blast to watch. It’s a little bit of a bummer that it’s going to land directly on Netflix without a big screen debut, but at least we’ll all be able to see the film when it hits the streamer on December 15th.
For Ginger and the flock, all is at stake when the dangers of the human world come home to roost; they’ll stop at nothing even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk to save chicken-kind. This time, they’re breaking in! Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget hatches on Netflix December 15
