There are a lot of things up in the air right now when it comes to Avatar: The Last Airbender. It’s stint on Netflix helped raise the series to its highest level of popularity in years, but the future of the Netflix live-action series is currently in question due to creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko bailing over creative differences. Meanwhile, over on the Paramount+ side of things, we’re now getting news that a new animated film is on the way.

Details on the new project are sparse, but we do know that both Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are on board as part of the Avatar Studios project that Viacom has set up. Personally, we’re hoping this will be the first in a series of animated films that explore the events after the original series.

Here’s what Brian Robbins, President, ViacomCBS Kids & Family had to say about the property.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender and Korra have grown at least ten-fold in popularity since their original hit runs on Nickelodeon, and Ramsey Naito and I are incredibly excited to have Mike and Bryan’s genius talent on board to helm a studio devoted to expanding their characters and world into new content and formats for fans everywhere,”

“Creator-driven stories and characters have long been the hallmarks of Nickelodeon, and Avatar Studios is a way to give Mike and Bryan the resources and runway to open up their imaginations even more and dive deeper into the action and mythology of Avatar as we simultaneously expand upon that world and the world of content available on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon.”
