There have been a lot of stories going around about a dwindling estimate for what Marvel Studios was hoping to achieve in the opening weekend box office take for Captain Marvel. Original estimates were up around $135 million, but subsequent estimates had dropped as low as $80 million. Now that the film is actually in theaters, we can forget the estimates and look at the facts.
In the first evening of showings on Thursday night, Captain Marvel has taken in $20.7 million domestically. That makes Captain Marvel the fifth highest opening film in the MCU. It beats other films’ first night takes like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($17 million), Spider-Man: Homecoming ($15.4 million), Thor: Ragnarok ($14.5 million). The only films to earn more on their opening night were Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, and Captain America: Civil War.
In addition to the domestic box office, the film has already taken in $44 million in international ticket sales, not counting China. That country will premier the film today to an estimated one-day ticket sales amount of #34 million. Regardless of whether or not you like Captain Marvel, it looks like the film is not going to be the ‘Solo’ style money-losing referendum that some fans were hoping for the MCU.
