The first official image from the new “Smurf” movie has surfaced and it’s exactly how I imaged CG Smurfs to look. The new film adaptation of the classic ’80s Hannah Barbera cartoon and original Belgian comic series will blend both computer animation (namely the Smurfs) with live-action.
According to USA Today’s reports, the Smurfs discover a magical portal that transports them to Central Park. They take refuge with a husband and wife couple played by Neil Patrick Harris and Glee’s Jayma Mays as Gargamel hunts them.
In the original cartoon Gargamel wanted nothing more than to eat the Smurfs. But that won’t be the case with the film. Instead of eating them Gargamel simply wants to capture them and use them as charms to make him more powerful.
Directed by Raja Gosnell (Scooby-Doo) the “Smurfs” will hit theaters August 3, 2011.
