While “Transformers 2” ruled the box office this summer, “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” still netted a profitable sum of $300 million worldwide, transforming it into “G.I. Joe: A Box Office Hero.” So when a studio makes more than its overhead, it can only mean two things. Franchise and sequel.
Although an inevitable sequel was announced back in August by Paramount’s Vice Chairman Rob Moore, Collider is breaking news reporting that a screenwriter has been hired for G.I. Joe 2, and Paramount is definitely moving forward with the project.
It’s unknown whether Stephen Sommer will continue to direct. Many of the actors from the first film were signed for sequels, so you can expect everyone to return and to kick some Cobra butt.
More on this story as it develops. But for now, “G.I. Joe 2” is practically lock and it’s something I’d definitely look forward to as I was more than pleasantly surprised by it.
GO JOE!
*Update*
IESB is reporting that Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are tasked with writing the sequel to “G.I. Joe 2.” If Reese and Wernick sound familiar to you, they’re the duo that penned the surprise hit “Zombieland” who are also officially signed to pen “Deadpool” for 20th Century Fox. We’ll have more as it develops.
