Hasbro’s cinematic universe is starting to come together. For the last several years, the plan has been to create a world in movies that would combine GI Joe, Micronauts, Transformers, and Rom The Space Knight. The soft reboot of the Transformers line via Bumblebee was the most critically acclaimed of the franchise and 2 GI Joe films are currently in pre-production. Now, THR is reporting that a director has been found to help bring the classic toy and comic line, Micronauts into live-action reality. Now all that’s left are the films for M.A.S.K. and Visionaries.

Helming the new film will be How To Train Your Dragon’s Oscar nominated director, Dean DeBlois. If you aren’t familiar with the world of Micronauts, THR lays down a pretty solid backstory –

“The comics told of a Microverse in which diverse worlds were linked together and in which a power mad dictator named Baron Karza kills the royal family, taking control. A small group of eclectic characters – a pilot awoken from a centuries-long deep sleep, alien gladiators, survivors of the coup – band together to form a resistance.”

Making a Micronauts film is going to be interesting. While there are definitely die-hard fans for the brand, most people have no idea who they are. They are especially unknown in the current, child toy age range that Hasbro is marketing towards. Bringing int a talent like DeBlois, gives us a lot of hope that they’ll focus on building the story out and let the marketing come after instead of the other way around.
