If you thought that the Amazon Prime LOTR series was the only project brewing in Middle Earth, you were wrong. The Wrap is reporting that New Line Cinema and Warner Bros animation are teaming up for a new animated adventure, Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. The new film is being directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus/ Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex,) and written by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance). As an added bonus, they’ve also brought in original LOTR screenwriter, Philippa Boyens as a consultant on the film.

According to the report, “Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” is set roughly 250 years before the events of “The Fellowship of the Ring” and follows the story of Helm Hammerhand, aka Helm’s Deep. In LOTR canon, Helm’s deep was more than just a fortress, it was the name of a legendary king of Rohan. Die-hard Tolkien fans will know him from the appendices of his books, but he was never part of a major story.

The film will expand on the story of the King of Rohan, the story of the Helm’s Deep fortress, and is also promised to tie back in some way to Peter Jackson’s original LOTR trilogy.
