We won’t have a full idea of what to expect in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe until after Avengers 4 hits theaters, but we do know that The Eternals will definitely be playing a part of it. Kevin Feige has previously announced that we’d be looking at a more ‘Cosmic’ phase for the next batch of movies, but it was also previously announced that James Gunn would be serving as Marvel’s galactic architect. With his firing and the unspecified delay of Guardians of the Galaxy 3, it remains to see how the new phase will be affected.
Earlier today, THR reported that Marvel Studios has found the director for The Eternals, a film that is set to probably become a cornerstone of the MCU’s next phase. The director that they’ve hired is Chloe Zhao. Much like Gunn Zhao is best known for her indie films like The Rider and Songs My Brothers Taught Me. Zhao was previously in the mix for the Black Widow film before that went to Cate Shortland.
Here’s what we currently know about the plot of The Eternals based on people who have seen the script by Matthew and Ryan Firpo:
The film is focused on “super-powered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants that were created by cosmic beings known as Celestials.” The report also confirms that the main characters will be Ikaris, “a man fueled by cosmic energy,” and Sersi, “who relishes moving amongst humans.”
