Before we get into the fact that Sex Education looks like it could be a really interesting new series to check on Netflix, can we take a moment to talk about Gillian Anderson continuing her streak of being one of the only American actresses we know to appear in numerous British films and TV series as a British character? We see Brits playing Americans all the time on this side of the pond, we just can’t think of another actor who has flipped the script with the skill and frequency that the former X-Files star has managed to.
With that out of the way, let’s talk about this new show. Sex Education is the story of a nerdy high school kid (Asa Butterfield) who is the child of a sex therapist (Anderson). When news of this gets out, he gets recruited to be the de-facto sex therapist for the entire student body, all while trying to navigate his own sexual awakening. It looks funny, engrossing, and potentially very touching.
The series drops Friday, January 11th on Netflix. Check out the trailer below!
Meet Otis Milburn – an inexperienced, socially awkward high school student who lives with his mother, a sex therapist. Surrounded by manuals, videos and tediously open conversations about sex, Otis is a reluctant expert on the subject. When his home life is revealed at school, Otis realizes that he can use his specialist knowledge to gain status. He teams up with Maeve, a whip-smart bad-girl, and together they set up an underground sex therapy clinic to deal with their fellow students’ weird and wonderful problems. Through his analysis of teenage sexuality, Otis realises he may need some therapy of his own.
